The visa is the immigration side: clause 5(2) of the Ministerial Regulation lists business as a non-immigrant purpose. The right to work is the labour side, under the Emergency Decree on Managing the Work of Aliens B.E. 2560, whose section 8 forbids a foreigner to work without a permis de travail and whose section 59 allows a permit only to someone admitted for a purpose other than tourism or transit. In practice a mission will want evidence from the intended employer before issuing the visa, and the work permit application follows on arrival. The visa does not authorise work and the work permit is not a visa, which is the confusion that causes most of the trouble in this area.

Enseignement (Enseignement hors B)

Multiple-entry visas cost 5,000 THB and are valid for one year. There is also a three-year multiple-entry business visa at 10,000 THB, and a three-year version at 5,000 THB for holders of an APEC Business Travel Card, both prescribed by the same fee regulation and both frequently overlooked. The initial stay period is 90 days, extendable annually based on employment or business requirements.

Non-Immigrant Visa “O” (Other Purposes)

Le Non-O visa category covers the purposes that do not fit the other letters, which makes it the most flexible of them. Those purposes are not open-ended: they are listed in clause 14 of the Ministerial Regulation B.E. 2545, made under section 34(15) of the Immigration Act, and there are eight. Family duties or accompanying a foreigner admitted on one of the other grounds, as a parent, spouse or dependent child of that person’s household, or as a private servant; supporting or being supported by a Thai national or by a person who holds residence in Thailand, in the same family relationships; duties for a state enterprise or a public charitable organisation; entering as an elderly person to live out one’s later years; the return of a former Thai national to visit relatives or to live in the Kingdom again; medical treatment; coaching a sport at the request of the authorities; and attending court proceedings as a party or a witness. The last three are real routes that most guides omit.

Mariage avec des citoyens thaïlandais

Foreign spouses of Thai nationals can obtain Non-O visas for initial stays of 90 days. Extensions require proof of marriage, financial documentation, and annual renewals. This pathway often leads to Résidence permanente applications after meeting residency requirements.

Retraite (50 ans et plus)

Clause 14(4) of the Ministerial Regulation puts it simply as entering as an elderly person to live out one’s later years and fixes no age and no sum. The age of 50 and the money come from a different instrument: clause 2.22 of the table annexed to Ordre du Bureau de l'immigration 12/2568 du 23 janvier 2025, which sets the criteria for the annual prorogation de séjour under section 35 of the Immigration Act. Those criteria are 50 years complete, and either income of not less than 65,000 THB a month or 800,000 THB on deposit in a commercial bank in Thailand. The deposit has a seasoning rule that this summary is too short to carry safely: the money must be in place for at least two months before the application and for three months after permission is granted, after which it may be drawn down but not below 400,000 THB. Our guide to the retirement extension of stay sets it out in full. The category does not carry a right to work.

Family members of Non-B or Non-ED visa holders can obtain dependent Non-O visas. This includes spouses, parents, and unmarried children under 20 years of age. Dependent visas are typically granted for periods matching the primary visa holder’s authorized stay.

Travail bénévole

The regulation’s wording here is narrower than the word “volunteer” suggests: clause 14(3) covers performing duties for a state enterprise or a public charitable organisation. Unpaid work for a private association that is neither of those does not fit the limb, whatever the organisation calls the role, and applications are decided on confirmation from the organisation and the approval of the relevant authority.

Most of the time you obtain it abroad, from a Thai embassy or consulate, and that is the ordinary route. It is not the only one, and the exceptions are written into the regulation rather than left to practice. Clause 5 of the Ministerial Regulation on the criteria, methods and conditions for visa issuance, exemption and change of category B.E. 2545 says a non-immigrant visa is applied for to a Thai embassy, a Thai consulate, or the Immigration Bureau, as the case may be. Clause 11 gives Immigration Bureau officers power to issue a non-immigrant visa to a visa-exempt foreigner already in Thailand who wants to stay on for one of the clause 5 purposes, and power to change a tourist or transit visa into a non-immigrant one; clause 12 does the same specifically for someone setting up a representative or regional office. Clause 6 paragraph two is the visa on arrival, issued at the checkpoint itself. So the accurate statement is that a visa is normally obtained abroad, and that changing category inside Thailand is a defined power of the Immigration Bureau rather than a favour.

Validité du visa vs. durée du séjour autorisé

Visa validity differs fundamentally from permitted stay duration. A visa’s validity period shows how long it can be used for entry. This is usually three months from the date it is issued. The immigration officer at the port of entry decides how long you can stay. This time may be different from your visa’s validity.

For example, a tourist visa may be valid for three months. However, it only allows a stay of 60 days upon entry. Six things were corrected as a result: the page said a visa can never be obtained inside Thailand, which the regulation contradicts in four clauses and which contradicted this page’s own FAQ; it listed five of the eight statutory Non-O purposes; it gave the retirement age and money as the rule for the visa when they are criteria for the annual extension, and omitted the seasoning period; it published the counter settlement rate for overstay as though it were the whole penalty; it converted the fees into US dollars at a rate that is out by about a third; and it carried a status note about the Electronic Travel Authorisation written in the present tense in July 2025.

Everything on this page that comes from immigration practice rather than from an instrument was not verified and should be confirmed with the mission or office handling your case: the documentary requirements listed for each category, the approving bodies named for the media, religious and film sub-categories, the Non-ED Plus arrangements, the O-X country list and its financial thresholds, the processing times, the payment methods, and the TM.30 and TM.47 mechanics, which our separate guides cover. Two specific claims were removed rather than corrected because no source we could produce supports them: a “WP.32” pre-approval letter, and a documentation exemption for Japanese nationals. Fees are stated in baht because that is how the regulation fixes them.
