Under Section 1457 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/thai-civil-and-commercial-code\/\">\u0e1b\u0e23\u0e30\u0e21\u0e27\u0e25\u0e01\u0e0e\u0e2b\u0e21\u0e32\u0e22\u0e41\u0e1e\u0e48\u0e07\u0e41\u0e25\u0e30\u0e1e\u0e32\u0e13\u0e34\u0e0a\u0e22\u0e4c<\/a> a marriage exists only once it is registered, whatever ceremony was held, so the certificate is the proof that the marriage exists at all. Immigration, land officers, banks and courts all ask for it.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rank-math-toc-block\" id=\"rank-math-toc\"><h2>\u0e2a\u0e32\u0e23\u0e1a\u0e31\u0e0d<\/h2><nav><ul><li><a href=\"#kor-ror-3-versus-kor-ror-2-and-22\">Kor Ror 3 versus Kor Ror 2 and 22<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#getting-the-certificate-as-a-foreigner\">Getting the certificate as a foreigner<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#what-the-certificate-is-used-for-later\">What the certificate is used for later<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#frequently-asked-questions\">\u0e04\u0e33\u0e16\u0e32\u0e21\u0e17\u0e35\u0e48\u0e1e\u0e1a\u0e1a\u0e48\u0e2d\u0e22<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"kor-ror-3-versus-kor-ror-2-and-22\">Kor Ror 3 versus Kor Ror 2 and 22<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p><strong>Three forms<\/strong> are easily confused. The marriage register (\u0e17\u0e30\u0e40\u0e1a\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e21\u0e23\u0e2a, Kor Ror 2) is the record that the spouses and their two witnesses sign in front of the registrar; it stays at the district office. The marriage certificate (Kor Ror 3) is issued from that register, one original to each spouse, on the same day. It carries the registration number, the names, nationalities and dates of birth of the spouses, the office and date of registration, and the registrar&#8217;s signature and seal. Registration is done under the Civil Registration Act B.E. 2534 and recorded centrally, so a certified copy of the register entry can be obtained later from a district office if an original is lost.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p><strong>Kor Ror 22<\/strong> is different again. A marriage celebrated abroad and later recorded in Thailand is entered on the family status register (\u0e17\u0e30\u0e40\u0e1a\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e10\u0e32\u0e19\u0e30\u0e41\u0e2b\u0e48\u0e07\u0e04\u0e23\u0e2d\u0e1a\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e27), and the extract from that register is the Kor Ror 22. It does not create the marriage; it records a foreign marriage that already exists so that Thai authorities can rely on it.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"getting-the-certificate-as-a-foreigner\">Getting the certificate as a foreigner<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The registration takes about an hour at the amphur or Bangkok district office (khet), and most offices now require an appointment booked one to three weeks ahead. A foreigner brings a passport, an affirmation of freedom to marry from their embassy, a Thai translation of it, and proof that any previous marriage ended. The affirmation and translation must be legalised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs first; standard legalisation can take several weeks in 2026, with a fast-track option of about ten working days. The district office fee is under 100 baht. Two witnesses sign the register, and an interpreter is needed if a spouse does not read Thai. The steps are in the guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/marriage-registration-service-in-bangkok\/\">marriage registration in Bangkok<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>\u0e40\u0e2d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/prenuptial\/\">\u0e02\u0e49\u0e2d\u0e15\u0e01\u0e25\u0e07\u0e01\u0e48\u0e2d\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e21\u0e23\u0e2a<\/a> must be lodged at the same appointment and noted in the register, or it is void. A certificate without that note means none was registered.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-the-certificate-is-used-for-later\">What the certificate is used for later<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The Kor Ror 3 is the core document for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/marriage-visa\/\">\u0e27\u0e35\u0e0b\u0e48\u0e32\u0e2a\u0e21\u0e23\u0e2a<\/a> extension based on a Thai spouse, for a spouse&#8217;s claim as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/statutory-heir\/\">\u0e17\u0e32\u0e22\u0e32\u0e17\u0e15\u0e32\u0e21\u0e01\u0e0e\u0e2b\u0e21\u0e32\u0e22<\/a>, for registering property, for a child&#8217;s birth certificate and for any divorce, contested or by consent. For use abroad it is normally translated and legalised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; from 28 February 2027 an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/apostille\/\">apostille<\/a> will replace the chain of legalisations for countries in the Hague Convention.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The common mistakes are treating a Buddhist or village ceremony as a marriage (it is not, without registration), losing the only original abroad without a certified copy, and assuming a foreign marriage appears in Thai records. A marriage registered overseas is valid in Thailand if valid where celebrated, but it is not in the Thai civil registry, so the amphur cannot divorce it by consent; that divorce goes through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/family-court\/\">\u0e28\u0e32\u0e25\u0e40\u0e22\u0e32\u0e27\u0e0a\u0e19\u0e41\u0e25\u0e30\u0e04\u0e23\u0e2d\u0e1a\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e27<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"frequently-asked-questions\">\u0e04\u0e33\u0e16\u0e32\u0e21\u0e17\u0e35\u0e48\u0e1e\u0e1a\u0e1a\u0e48\u0e2d\u0e22<\/h2>\n\n<div id=\"rank-math-faq\" class=\"rank-math-block\">\n<div class=\"rank-math-list\">\n<div id=\"faq-question-1\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question\">How do I get a copy of my Thai marriage certificate?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer\">\n\n<p>Apply at a district office (amphur or khet) with your passport and the registration details. The office issues a certified copy of the marriage register entry, since the registration is held in the central civil registration database.
