Many people come to Thailand, often for a short stay, and before they know it, they\u2019ve been here a decade or even more. This can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Annual visa extension and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/work-permit-in-bangkok\/\">work permit renewals<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n<li>90-day reporting;<\/li>\n\n<li>Being at the whim of visa and immigration officials;<\/li>\n\n<li>Having your permission to stay cancelled if you lose your job, or due to administrative stuff up from HR;<\/li>\n\n<li>Unable to own major personal assets, like land (or that Thai beach house you always wanted!);<\/li>\n\n<li>Barred from being majority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/glossary\/shareholder\/\">shareholder<\/a> in your own business;<\/li>\n\n<li>Forced to rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/glossary\/nominee\/\">nominees<\/a> to be the majority shareholders for your business; and<\/li>\n\n<li>Shut out from many banking products, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/glossary\/mortgage\/\">mortgages<\/a> or business loans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In and of themselves, these things may not seem such big deals. But over time, the frustration of each one of these can and does accumulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-the-benefits-of-thai-citizenship\">What are the benefits to get Thai citizenship?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The benefit of removing those frustrations outlined above is benefit in and of itself. However, as someone who holds a Thai ID card, the benefit is pretty straight forward: Simplicity and certainty.\r\n\r\nAs difficult as life is as a foreigner, holding a Thai ID card literally the opposite. It cuts through the daily administrative complexity, making life much easier to manage. No visa, no<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a aria-describedby=\"tt\" class=\"glossaryLink\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;TM30&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;The TM30 is a mandatory notification form under Thai immigration law requiring landlords, property owners, or hotel managers to report a foreigner\u2019s stay at their property within 24 hours of arrival. This applies to both short-term and long-term stays and can be submitted at the local immigration office or online. Documents typically needed include the foreigner\u2019s passport copy, visa page, entry stamp, the landlord\u2019s ID, and proof of property ownership or lease. Failing to report can lead to fines between 800 and 2,000 Baht and may affect visa renewals or extensions.&amp;lt;br\/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\" \"format\":\"html\"}]' href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/glossary\/tm30\/\" role=\"link\" tabindex=\"0\">TM30<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">, no 90 days notification, no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/glossary\/work-permit\/\">work permit<\/a>, allowed to own land, allowed to do business as a Thai citizen, no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/glossary\/re-entry-permit\/\">re-entry permit<\/a>.\r\n\r\nMore importantly, your presence or ability to be in Thailand will never be questioned again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-getting-thai-citizenship-difficult\">Is getting Thai citizenship difficult?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, it isn\u2019t.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately there is a lot of \u2018barstool gossip\u2019 which leads people to believe that getting citizenship is an impossible goal.\r\n\r\nWhile Thai citizenship isn\u2019t available just to anyone, the simple answer is that it isn\u2019t as hard to get as you think.\r\n\r\nOften, the perceived difficulty (as opposed to the reality) is generally the only thing holding people back from ever considering applying.\r\n\r\nTime and again I hear expats and Thai people tell me that it is impossible for foreigners to get Thai citizenship. Common myths include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have to be able to speak, read and write Thai fluently;<\/li>\n\n<li>You have to live in Thailand for two decades before you can apply;<\/li>\n\n<li>Only people who have \u2018connections\u2019 in high places get citizenship;<\/li>\n\n<li>They only want millionaires to apply; or<\/li>\n\n<li>You have to pay give lots of brown paper bags stuffed with cash to officials;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-reality-is-the-complete-opposite\"><strong>The reality is the complete opposite.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The government fee to apply is 5,000 baht, plus a further 500 baht for the naturalisation certificate once it is granted;<\/li>\n\n<li>If you are married to a Thai citizen and you are earning 40,000 baht per month from working in Thailand, then you are likely eligible; and<\/li>\n\n<li>The level of Thai needed is no more than conversational level Thai, and the requirement is totally waived for those married to Thai citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The honest truth is so long as you are eligible or getting yourself to the point where you soon will be eligible, the paperwork and processes are no more cumbersome, and in many cases easier, than applying for citizenship in say Australia, Canada, the US or the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xenQvBaCaNA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"529\" title=\"How I got my Thai citizenship\" width=\"940\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"who-qualifies-for-thai-citizenship\"><strong>Who qualifies for Thai citizenship?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a couple of main categories of people who would generally qualify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People living here on consecutive work permits and visas, paying income tax;<\/li>\n\n<li>Those married to Thai citizens; and<\/li>\n\n<li>Those born to a Thai parent or Permanent residents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the main categories, and depending on which one you are, there will be specific paths to go down. In Bangkok, they are located at the National Police HQ on Rama 1 Road, just across from Central World, where you can start your journey towards Thai nationality. It is a small friendly office, unlike any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/glossary\/immigration-bureau\/\">immigration office<\/a> in Thailand you have even seen! So you can start by asking there. And this is important: you can easily apply yourself.
