The Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979) allows the competent official to extend a temporary stay, and police orders set the conditions for each purpose. It is the mechanism behind every long stay in Thailand: the visa gets the foreigner through the border, the extension keeps them there.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rank-math-toc-block\" id=\"rank-math-toc\"><h2>\u0e2a\u0e32\u0e23\u0e1a\u0e31\u0e0d<\/h2><nav><ul><li><a href=\"#what-the-extension-is-and-where-its-rules-sit\">What the extension is and where its rules sit<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#applying-at-the-immigration-office\">Applying at the immigration office<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#extension-visa-and-change-of-status-compared\">Extension, visa and change of status compared<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#frequently-asked-questions\">\u0e04\u0e33\u0e16\u0e32\u0e21\u0e17\u0e35\u0e48\u0e1e\u0e1a\u0e1a\u0e48\u0e2d\u0e22<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-the-extension-is-and-where-its-rules-sit\">What the extension is and where its rules sit<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p><strong>A visa is not a period of stay.<\/strong> The embassy&#8217;s sticker allows the holder to present themselves at the border; the officer then stamps a permitted stay (30 or 60 days on an exemption, 90 days on a single-entry non-immigrant visa). The extension of stay lengthens that stamp. The Act gives the discretion; police orders list the categories, documents and money required, which is why the 800,000 baht and 400,000 baht figures change by order rather than by statute.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Two families exist. Short extensions of 30 days are granted once on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/visa-exemption\/\">visa exemption<\/a> or tourist visa, and shorter ones on medical, humanitarian or departure grounds. One-year extensions are granted to holders of a non-immigrant visa for retirement (800,000 baht or 65,000 baht a month, age 50), marriage to a Thai (400,000 baht or 40,000 baht a month), employment with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/work-permit\/\">\u0e43\u0e1a\u0e2d\u0e19\u0e38\u0e0d\u0e32\u0e15\u0e17\u0e33\u0e07\u0e32\u0e19<\/a>, study, or support of a Thai child, and are renewed each year on the same basis.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"applying-at-the-immigration-office\">Applying at the immigration office<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The application goes to the office for the province where the applicant lives, up to 30 days before the current stay expires (45 days at Chaeng Watthana in Bangkok), and filing early loses nothing because the new year runs from the old expiry date. The file is the TM7, one 4 x 6 cm photograph, the passport and signed copies, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/tm30\/\">\u0e17\u0e35\u0e40\u0e2d\u0e47\u0e2130<\/a> receipt, proof of address, and the category evidence: bank letter and passbook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/marriage-certificate\/\">\u0e43\u0e1a\u0e17\u0e30\u0e40\u0e1a\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e21\u0e23\u0e2a<\/a>, work permit and company papers, or school letter.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Marriage and some employment applications are stamped under consideration for about 30 days before the year is granted. The extension is then followed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thailawonline.com\/th\/glossary\/90-day-notification-of-address\/\">\u0e23\u0e32\u0e22\u0e07\u0e32\u0e19 90 \u0e27\u0e31\u0e19<\/a> and, for any trip abroad, a re-entry permit of 1,000 or 3,800 baht, without which the extension is cancelled at departure. Refusals are discretionary and recorded, and an applicant refused a one-year extension normally receives 7 days to leave. A change of visa status, which is a different application, costs 2,000 baht, and a re-entry permit to protect the extension when travelling costs 1,000 baht for a single trip or 3,800 baht for multiple trips.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"faq-question-2\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question\">When should I apply for my extension of stay?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer\">\n\n<p>Within the 30 days before the current permitted stay expires, or 45 days at the Bangkok office on Chaeng Watthana Road. Applying early does not shorten anything, because the new period runs from the old expiry date.
