Firm annotation
This section completes the autopsy mechanism begun in section 151 by prescribing the contents and formalities of the examiner's report: findings, an opinion, the cause of death so far as ascertainable, and a dated signature. Returning the report to the inquest official ensures the medical findings become part of the inquest file that supports the determinations required under section 150. The report is the documentary link between the scientific examination and the official record of how the person died.
Why this matters in practice
For families and lawyers, the examiner's report under this section is a key document: it records the condition of the body, the opinion given, and the stated cause of death, and it feeds directly into the inquest file and any later court inquiry. If the cause of death is disputed, this report is often the starting point for questioning the findings or seeking an independent expert opinion, a right expressly preserved in the section 150 inquiry.
Frequently asked questions
What must the autopsy report contain?
Under section 152, it must describe the condition of the corpse or part examined with an opinion, state the cause of death so far as possible, and be dated and signed before being sent to the inquest official.
Who receives the autopsy report?
The physician or government analyst sends the report to the official conducting the inquest, so it becomes part of the inquest file.
