อันว่าสัญญาประกันภัยนั้น คือสัญญาซึ่งบุคคลคนหนึ่งตกลงจะใช้ค่าสินไหมทดแทน หรือใช้เงินจำนวนหนึ่งให้ในกรณีวินาศภัยหากมีขึ้น หรือในเหตุอย่างอื่นในอนาคตดังได้ระบุไว้ในสัญญา และในการนี้บุคคลอีกคนหนึ่งตกลงจะส่งเงินซึ่งเรียกว่า เบี้ยประกันภัย

A contract of insurance is a contract by which one person agrees to pay compensation, or a sum of money, in the event of a loss occurring, or on some other future event specified in the contract, and by which another person agrees to pay a sum of money called the premium.
