Sub-district (ตำบล), the administrative unit grouping several villages (muban) below the amphoe level. A tambon outside municipal areas is governed by a Tambon Administrative Organisation (Aor Bor Tor) and is led by a kamnan elected by the village headmen. Tambon boundaries are relevant for land-use planning, local elections, and certain permits.
