The district-level administrative unit in Thailand, roughly equivalent to a county or borough. An amphoe (อำเภอ) is led by a district chief (nai amphoe) and groups together several sub-districts (tambon). The amphoe office is the place where Thai citizens and residents register marriages, divorces, births, deaths, prenuptial agreements, house registration books (tabien baan), and most civil status matters.
