Transfer a motorcycle in Thailand: 6 Easy Steps

Do note that the following information about how to transfer a motorcycle in Thailand was taken directly from the transportation department. However, it can vary a little from a province to another.  Do verify with Thai authorities at www.dit.go.th

1. By the owner himself

a) Need the Green Book

You will need the registration book (green book) go transfer a motorcycle in Thailand. The owner must sign in the indicated area for bondholders.

b) Fill the Form to Request a Transfer

A transfer request and transfer acceptance forms (use the forms of transportation department only) along with a copy of identification card of the transferor and the transferee and certified the copy. For foreigners, they need to show passport and often a work permit** (see below ** for explanation). You can find these form to transfer a motorcycle in Thailand at the local transportation department or online.

Notes: If the transfer is between spouses (you will need the marriage certificate and certified the copy by both parties) do will not have to pay the transfer fee appraisal but pay around 105 Baht transfer fee

Do note that a work permit is NOT a requirement.

However, foreigners must show a proof of address and the transportation department often ask for that document. A yellow ta bian baan (or yellow house book) can also be a proof of address. Another way is to get what is called a “certificate of residence” from your local Thai immigration. Lastly, we have seen people using a “police report” as proof of address.  It is not complex to transfer a motorcycle in Thailand but if you do not have the proper documents, they will refuse.

c) Inspection is needed

Please bring the motorcycle for inspection at the vehicle check-up. It might not be required if the motorcycle is almost new. They do it for security. Inspection is needed to transfer a motorcycle in Thailand (Bring any other vehicles that require inspection for transfer).

d) Appraisal

Once the document is completed, please wait for the next step at the document receiving and price evaluation window. The appraisal staff will review the document. Once the review is complete, the staff will return the document to you at the receiving window for verification and payment of the transfer fee. You are almost done!

 e) Give documents and pay the tax

Submit the document during the document inspection and pay the following fees: 90 baht for tax, 10 baht for vehicle check, 105 baht for transfer a motorcycle in Thailand and add 20 baht for management. The transfer fee is calculated based on the vehicle’s assessed value. Note that if a transfer is between spouses due to affection, no fee is applicable according to the Bureau of Transportation.

f) Get Back the Registration Book

Please receive the registration book and verify if the transfer has been completed. Please note that in the event of a change in the property address, transfer, payment for motorcycle registration fee, or payment of taxes, kindly instruct the staff to update the address promptly. It is not difficult to transfer a motorcycle in Thailand but if you do not speak Thai, you might want a friend that can translate for you. Especially in rural areas that do not have lots of tourists. As you can see, it wasn’t difficult to transfer a motorcycle in Thailand.

2. Using a Power of Attorney to Do the Transfer

The same process can be completed by utilizing a power of attorney (a specific form from the transportation office) in addition to a certified copy of the transferee’s identification. This method is employed when one party is unavailable for the transfer. For foreigners, it is necessary to present their passport and typically a work permit (or proof of address like a certificate of residence in Thailand), a stamp duty fee of 10 baht, and a copy of their identity.
