เอ วีซ่าเกษียณอายุ (วีซ่าเกษียณอายุ, also called a การขยายระยะเวลาเกษียณอายุ หรือ Non-O retirement) is the informal name for any of three ways a foreigner aged 50 or over may stay in Thailand without working: a Non-Immigrant O visa followed by yearly extensions of stay, the one-year Non-Immigrant O-A issued abroad, and the ten-year Non-Immigrant O-X for nationals of 14 countries. Thai law has no visa actually called retirement; most retirees hold an extension of stay for the purpose of retirement, renewed each year inside Thailand.

The three routes and what each requires
The Non-O route is the most common: enter on a 90-day Non-O, or change status from a visa exemption or tourist entry at immigration, then apply for a one-year extension of stay based on retirement. The financial condition is 800,000 baht in a Thai bank, seasoned for two months before the first application and three months before each renewal, with a floor of 400,000 baht for the rest of the year; or income of at least 65,000 baht a month; or a combination reaching 800,000 baht a year. There is no health-insurance condition on this extension.
The O-A is a one-year multiple-entry visa issued by a Thai embassy in the applicant’s home country, with the same 800,000 baht or 65,000 baht test proven from a home bank, plus a police clearance, a medical certificate and health insurance of at least 3,000,000 baht or 100,000 US dollars. The O-X runs five years and renews once for ten in total, for nationals of 14 countries (the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and nine European states), with 3,000,000 baht on deposit locked for a year and never below 1,500,000 baht thereafter.
Practical points at the immigration office
The extension is filed on form TM7 with a fee of 1,900 baht, up to 30 days before the current stay expires (45 days at Chaeng Watthana in Bangkok). Documents: passport and signed copies, a fresh bank letter, the passbook and 12-month statement, the ทีเอ็ม30 receipt, proof of address, a 4 x 6 cm photo and a hand-drawn map to the residence. Income is proven by an embassy letter or by 12 months of transfers from abroad into a Thai account.
The holder must then file the 90-day report and buy a ใบอนุญาตกลับเข้าประเทศ before every trip abroad, or the extension dies at the border. The common mistake is relying on a pension close to the 65,000 baht line: 68,000 baht when planned can become 64,200 baht when the baht strengthens, and 64,200 fails. Working on a retirement extension is not permitted.
Which route suits which retiree
| เส้นทาง | ความยาว | เงิน | Insurance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-O extension | 1 year, renewable in Thailand | 800,000 baht or 65,000 baht a month | ไม่มี |
| O-A | 1 year, from embassy abroad | 800,000 baht or 65,000 baht a month | 3,000,000 baht or 100,000 US dollars |
| O-X | 5 years, renewable once | 3,000,000 baht, or 1,800,000 baht plus 1,200,000 baht income | 40,000 baht outpatient, 400,000 baht inpatient |
The Non-O extension costs nothing in insurance and the money can be spent down to 400,000 baht. The O-A gives a full year settled before leaving home, but the insurance condition follows it at every renewal. The O-X is rarely chosen because it surrenders access to 1,500,000 baht for the whole period. Retirees with larger means compare it with the วีซ่า LTR, which adds tax advantages and exempts the holder from 90-day reporting.
คำถามที่พบบ่อย
How much money do I need for a retirement visa in Thailand?
For the usual Non-O extension, 800,000 baht in a Thai bank seasoned for two months before the first application and three months before each renewal, or income of at least 65,000 baht a month, or a combination totalling 800,000 baht a year. The balance may fall to 400,000 baht for the rest of the year but no lower. The O-X requires 3,000,000 baht.
Is health insurance required for a Thai retirement visa?
Not for the Non-O extension of stay based on retirement, which carries no insurance condition. It is required for the O-A visa, at 3,000,000 baht or 100,000 US dollars of cover, and for the O-X, at 40,000 baht outpatient and 400,000 baht inpatient from a Thai insurer.
Can I work in Thailand on a retirement visa?
No. The retirement extension is granted on the basis that the holder does not work, and a work permit cannot be issued against it. A retiree who wants to work must change to a Non-B or, if married to a Thai, to a marriage extension, which does allow a work permit.
