A permis de rentrée (ใบอนุญาตเดินทางกลับเข้ามาในราชอาณาจักร, form TM8 ou TM.8, également appelé re-entry stamp ou re-entry visa) is permission under Section 39 of the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979) for a foreigner to leave Thailand and return without losing the stay already granted. Without it, a single-entry visa or an extension of stay is cancelled the moment the holder passes through departure control, and the foreigner returns as a tourist on a exemption de visa. It preserves the existing permission; it never lengthens it.

Article 39 deals with a foreigner who has been permitted to stay temporarily and wishes to leave and re-enter within that period: they must apply to the competent official for a re-entry permit, and on return the remaining period of stay continues to run. A single-entry visa or an extension is by nature a single permission tied to one entry, so leaving ends it unless the permit has first been stamped in the passport.
Two kinds are issued. A single re-entry permit costs 1,000 baht and allows one departure and return. A multiple re-entry permit costs 3,800 baht and covers any number of trips until the current permission to stay expires. Neither has a life of its own: both die on the date already stamped in the passport, so a permit bought two months before the extension expires is worth two months, whatever the fee. Once the extension is renewed a new permit is needed.

The permit is issued in person only; there is no online application. It can be obtained at any immigration office, in Bangkok at Division 1 on Chaeng Watthana Road on weekdays from 8.30 to 16.30 (closed 12.00 to 13.00), with processing in 30 to 60 minutes. It is also issued around the clock at the immigration counters in the departure halls at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, before passport control, and at Chiang Mai and Phuket airports, which is where most travellers get it on the day of the flight.
Documents: the passport, form TM8, one 4 x 6 cm photograph on a white background, and signed copies of the data page, the current visa or extension stamp and the latest entry stamp. The common mistake is arriving at the airport counter with no photograph and 20 minutes to spare. Leaving Thailand also resets the rapport de 90 jours count, and a new TDAC is filed for the return.

The permit is often confused with a prolongation de visa. The extension lengthens the stay and is applied for on form TM7; the permit only protects that stay during travel and is applied for on form TM8. A foreigner who forgets the permit and leaves has no remedy at the border abroad: the extension is gone, and on return they receive the ordinary visa exemption (30 days from 15 September 2026) and must start again with a new Non-Immigrant visa or a change of status, including any seasoning period for bank funds.

What happens if I leave Thailand without a re-entry permit?
The extension of stay or single-entry visa is cancelled on departure. On return you are admitted under the ordinary rules for your nationality, usually a visa exemption of 30 days from 15 September 2026, and must obtain a new Non-Immigrant visa or change status and re-apply for the extension, including any waiting period for money in the bank.
