Si plusieurs personnes sont en droit d'exiger l'exécution d'une obligation de telle sorte que chacune puisse en réclamer l'intégralité, alors que le débiteur n'est tenu de l'exécuter qu'une seule fois (par exemple, des créanciers conjoints), le débiteur peut, à son choix, exécuter l'obligation au profit de l'un quelconque des créanciers.
