ถ้าข้อความในตั๋วเงินใด หรือในคำรับรองตั๋วเงินรายใด มีผู้แก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงในข้อสำคัญโดยที่คู่สัญญาทั้งปวงผู้ต้องรับผิดตามตั๋วเงินมิได้ยินยอมด้วยหมดทุกคนไซร้ ท่านว่าตั๋วเงินนั้นก็เป็นอันเสีย เว้นแต่ยังคงใช้ได้ต่อคู่สัญญาซึ่งเป็นผู้ทำการแก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงนั้น หรือได้ยินยอมด้วยกับการแก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงนั้น กับทั้งผู้สลักหลังในภายหลังแต่หากตั๋วเงินใดได้มีผู้แก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงในข้อสำคัญ แต่ความเปลี่ยนแปลงนั้นไม่ประจักษ์ และตั๋วเงินนั้นตกอยู่ในมือผู้ทรงโดยชอบด้วยกฎหมายไซร้ ท่านว่าผู้ทรงคนนั้นจะเอาประโยชน์จากตั๋วเงินนั้นก็ได้เสมือนดังว่ามิได้มีการแก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงเลย และจะบังคับการใช้เงินตามเนื้อความเดิมแห่งตั๋วนั้นก็ได้กล่าวโดยเฉพาะ การแก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงเช่นจะกล่าวต่อไปนี้ ท่านถือว่าเป็นการแก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงในข้อสำคัญ คือแก้ไขเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างใด ๆ แก่วันที่ลง จำนวนเงินอันจะพึงใช้ เวลาใช้เงิน สถานที่ใช้เงิน กับทั้งเมื่อตั๋วเงินเขารับรองไว้ทั่วไปไม่เจาะจงสถานที่ใช้เงิน ไปเติมความระบุสถานที่ใช้เงินเข้าโดยที่ผู้รับรองมิได้ยินยอมด้วย

English translation
Where a bill, or an acceptance of a bill, is materially altered without the assent of all the parties liable on it, the bill is avoided, except as against the party who made, or assented to, the alteration and subsequent endorsers. However, where a bill has been materially altered but the alteration is not apparent, and the bill is in the hands of a lawful holder, that holder may avail himself of the bill as if it had not been altered, and may enforce payment according to its original tenor. In particular, the following are material alterations: any alteration of the date, of the sum payable, of the time of payment, of the place of payment, and, where the bill has been accepted generally, the addition of a place of payment.
