Un LL.B. (นิติศาสตรบัณฑิต, nitisat bandit, from the Latin Legum Baccalaureus, ou Bachelor of Laws) is the undergraduate law degree awarded by Thai universities after a four-year programme. It is the academic foundation of every legal career in Thailand: without an LL.B. from an institution recognised by the Lawyers Council of Thailand, a person cannot apply for the lawyer licence, and without it no one may sit the Thai Bar examination that leads to judicial or prosecutorial office. A foreigner reading a Thai lawyer’s profile will see the abbreviation next to the name of the university.

What the degree involves in Thailand

Four years of study at a faculty of law cover the Code civil et commercial, the Criminal Code, procedure, constitutional and administrative law, and increasingly business, tax and international law. Thammasat, Chulalongkorn and Ramkhamhaeng are the oldest and largest faculties; Ramkhamhaeng’s open-admission programme has produced a large share of the country’s licensed lawyers. The degree is taught in Thai, with a few English-language programmes at the major universities.

The Lawyers Council decides which degrees it recognises. A foreign LL.B. is not accepted for the Thai lawyer licence unless the Council has approved the institution, and in any event the licence is limited to Thai nationals. A avocat thaïlandais agréé therefore always holds a recognised LL.B., while an LL.B. holder is not necessarily licensed.

Reading the letters on a lawyer’s profile

An LL.B. tells a client that the person completed a law degree, not that he or she may practise. The licence from the Conseil des avocats de Thaïlande is what confers the right to appear in court, and an LL.M. (master’s) or a foreign degree adds specialisation rather than any additional right. When a firm describes staff as “legal advisers” with an LL.B. but no licence number, court work will be done by someone else.

Foire aux questions

How long does an LL.B. take in Thailand?

Four years of full-time study at a Thai university faculty of law. Graduates then need the Lawyers Council’s legal practice training and examination to obtain a lawyer licence, which typically adds a year or more.

Can I practise law in Thailand with a foreign LL.B.?

Not as a licensed Thai lawyer. The licence requires Thai nationality and a degree recognised by the Lawyers Council of Thailand. A foreigner with a foreign law degree may work as a legal consultant with a work permit but may not appear in a Thai court.

Is an LL.B. the same as being a lawyer in Thailand?

No. The LL.B. is the degree; the lawyer licence issued by the Lawyers Council is the professional qualification. Only a person holding both may represent clients in court and sign pleadings.
