A Licence ès sciences. (วิทยาศาสตรบัณฑิต, witthayasat bandit, aussi écrit BSc ou Bachelor of Science) is an undergraduate degree in a scientific or technical field such as engineering, computing, chemistry or economics. It appears in a legal context in two places: on the profiles of Thai lawyers who studied a science before law, and in the qualification documents that a foreigner submits for a work permit or professional licence. It gives no right to practise law, which in Thailand requires an LL.B. and a Lawyers Council licence.

Why a lawyer’s profile may show a B.Sc.
Some Thai lawyers take a first degree in science and then read law, either as a second bachelor’s or through Ramkhamhaeng’s open programme. The combination is useful in construction and engineering disputes, environmental and industrial licensing, medical negligence, data protection and intellectual property, where the lawyer must read a technical report as fluently as a contract. On a profile, the B.Sc. sits alongside the LL.B. and the licence number; the LL.B. and the licence are what matter for court work.
Where a foreigner’s B.Sc. matters legally
Work permits and professional licences are the main place a degree certificate is examined. The Department of Employment expects a foreign applicant’s qualifications to match the position, and a B.Sc. in engineering or computing supports a skilled role, subject to the 4:1 Thai-to-foreign employee ratio unless the employer is BOI-promoted. Regulated professions, engineering and architecture among them, require a separate licence from the Thai professional council, and some occupations are closed to foreigners regardless of qualification. The certificate, and often a transcript, must be legalised by the Thai embassy abroad and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before submission.

A client choosing a lawyer should treat a B.Sc. as evidence of subject-matter knowledge and check the licence separately with the Conseil des avocats de Thaïlande. A consultant with a B.Sc. and no LL.B. may be an excellent technical witness but cannot plead a case.

Can someone with a B.Sc. practise law in Thailand?
No. Practising law and appearing in court require an LL.B. from a recognised university and a licence from the Lawyers Council of Thailand, which is open only to Thai nationals. A B.Sc. is a science degree and confers no legal right, although many Thai lawyers hold one in addition to their law degree.
Do I need my B.Sc. certificate legalised for a Thai work permit?
Usually yes. The Department of Employment asks for evidence that the applicant’s education and experience fit the job, and a degree certificate issued abroad is normally legalised at the Thai embassy in the issuing country and then at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok, with a Thai translation.
Why do Thai lawyers list a B.Sc. on their profile?
Because it shows technical training that is relevant in construction, engineering, medical, environmental or technology disputes. It is additional to the LL.B. and the lawyer licence, which remain the qualifications that permit practice.
